It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
First, I’ve checked the weather to see what the forecast might mean for the High Line gardens, and I can adjust our irrigation program accordingly, then I check in with the horticulture staff to make sure the gardens are ready to thrive over the weekend, and don’t need any special care. If I’m staying in the city, which happens about half the month, I’m usually busy making plans with friends to check out restaurants, museums, art galleries or the theater and then I race home to walk the dog in Central Park, the perfect destresser for a busy week. Love those big old trees!

Any restaurant plans?
There’s an amazing Vietnamese restaurant called Banh on Amsterdam at 106th Street that serves the most delicious banh mi and pho. My local Indian, Mughlai on Columbus, is great for takeout.

How about a little leisure or culture?
I have an energetic golden retriever and we spend 45 minutes playing fetch in Central Park every morning. It’s off-leash for dogs before 9a, absolutely Doggie Disneyland. I’m a TDF member, so whatever is listed on their site is a great way to see theater that doesn’t break the bank. And Lincoln Center, which is a 20 minute walk, often has opera or dance options on TDF. And gardens, I’m a short drive from Wavehill in Riverdale, and Untermeyer Gardens in Yonkers, two incredibly beautiful former estate gardens.

Any weekend getaways?
I’m lucky to have dear friends in Falls Village in Litchfield County that will host me a couple of weekends a month. I earn my keep (and my sanity) with gardening chores. They live on the Housatonic River, so there’s no shortage of interesting nature to engage with like bald eagles and great blue herons and I enjoy hiking on the Appalachian Trail which cuts through the village. We often visit nearby Millerton, NY, which has a great small downtown with a fun independent cinema, The Millerton Moviehouse and an old-fashioned inn, The Millerton Inn, plus great antiquing. Other favorite spots include the Oakhurst Diner, and I have to visit Oblong Books every time I go.

What was your last great vacation?
I was in Paris last year to attend the Hockney exhibit opening at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. The show was amazing. I spent five days in Paris seeing gardens and museums, then took a train to Barcelona to see the architecture. I’m a real Gaudi fan, and the charming botanic garden (and of course the cuisine) was amazing. Catch a concert at the Palau de la Musica Catalan if you can, it’s an amazing Art Nouveau building. Then another train to Madrid, my first time visiting. I was really impressed with the sophistication of the city. The Prado Museum is right next to the botanic garden, and the NH Madrid Nacional Hotel is right across the street and a great mid-priced hotel option. So many great museums, gardens, and concerts and all within walking distance!

What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I’m crazy about my new Airpod Pro 3s. They cancel out that annoying traffic and subway noise, and will actually pause what’s playing if I talk to someone (or my dog, which evidently I do often).

Where are you donating your time?
I’m a founding member of the American LGBTQ+ Museum. They create wonderful exhibits that travel around the country to areas without access to this important programming, and they’ll eventually have their own museum space behind the New York Historical Society.

Lasting journey

Restaurants in their adolescence — i.e., those that have passed the impressive decade mark but are still shy of their 20th — can tend to get lost. Junoon, which opened in Flatiron in 2010 before moving a few doors down in 2021, slots into that category. These kind of restaurants generally are easier to get into, even the good ones. And Junoon is still very much a good one.

The upscale Indian spot’s menus are decorated, its operation is polished, and its space is pretty with room to breathe. That’s more than enough to recommend any place, but the other key factor is that Junoon has, you know, available tables.

Almost everything here is arranged into prix fixe options, including Junoon’s “journey through India” tasting of seven courses ($165 per) that really is a trip. It is literally presented with a tableside puzzle map. Servers slot in regions as they detail lovely preparations like the particularly impressive, Punjabi-influenced baingan bharta that pairs its smoky eggplant-stuffed pao with ghost chili aioli and grape chutney with actual, rolling smoke that, to be fair, maybe does hark to the trends of Junoon’s own early days. Regardless, it’s a fun throwback. The larger of the parade of small plates, like the perfectly mauve Nagaland duck, are also terrific sans theatrics. A similarly dry-aged duck also appears on the truncated menu, which includes its own unique options like tandoori octopus, smoked masala ribs, and baby goat shank.

Dessert like a rice pudding dressed up with candied almonds and caramelized bananas is an add-on for those shorter jaunts, and a charming arrangement of milk chocolate ganache, dark cocoa cake, and vintage chai ice cream is exclusive to the full excursion. Junoon’s cocktails are also uniquely dynamic, and its bar is actually big enough to provide space to sip them, even sans the full itinerary. –Amber Sutherland-Namako

It’s Tuesday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I have a two-year-old and a three-month-old, so the early part of the day is usually coffee, bottles, and hanging out with them before I head into my office in Midtown. I’m the founder of Ripi, a chef-driven frozen pasta brand that makes high-quality ravioli to cook at home. Since I’m a solo founder, every day touches a lot of areas.

What’s on the agenda for today?
We’re gearing up for a big retail launch in Target, so I’m spending a lot of time getting that in order. Today I’m reviewing details for the next production run, wrapping up our launch plan on social media, and coordinating freight to make sure product arrives on time. Running this brand means you spend almost as much time thinking about trucks and pallets as you do about pasta.

Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Tonight we’re going to Momokawa, one of my favorite neighborhood spots on the Upper East Side. It’s a nice break after thinking about pasta all day. On weekends, my wife and I try to sneak in a date night. This week we’re going to Crevette. I love Lord’s and Dame, so the sister restaurant has quickly become a favorite, even if it’s a trek from the Upper East Side.

How about a little leisure or culture this week?
I try to work out once a week at Padel Haus, usually the Williamsburg location. The reward after is grabbing a slice (or two) at Fini, which probably cancels out the workout but feels worth it.

What NYC store or service do you always recommend?
Roy’s Fish Market, a small, no-frills spot with some of the best fish in the city. And the negi toro hand roll while you’re waiting is mandatory.

Where are you donating your time or money?
I really admire the work City Harvest does across the city.

It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
My favorite two hours of the entire week are Friday from 5-7p. They’re pure magic. Spirits are high. There is a bounce in people’s steps. Smiles are everywhere. For me, it’s about a little family time with the kids before getting ready to hit the floor at Passerine, my Indian restaurant on East 20th St.

I’ll start in the front lounge, the Drawing Room, with some friends for happy hour before I slowly make my way to a table in the back for a joyful, delicious dinner. If the mood strikes (which it often does), I’m headed to Temple Bar down on Lafayette after dinner. It’s the perfect end cap and the DJ is always just right. And, oh, all this and home by 11p. My kids will be in my bed by 730a latest!

Any restaurant plans?
When I step away from my spots, I’ll be at breakfast at ABCv, grabbing a juice at Joe & the Juice, and hitting my friend Cedric Vongerichten up for a table at Ma-dé or Wayan. He and his wife Ochi are the best, and their spots are undeniably perfect.

How about a little leisure or culture?
In my next life, my job is clear: game show host. I’m not even kidding! I love games so much and love people (and messing with them) so much. So, I love to get my family and friends together for games. I know it’s a specific kind of person who’s willing to play a game, but I’ve got good ones and, with me, there are always prizes (is it even a game if there isn’t a Showcase Showdown kinda prize?) At some point in your life, you need to experience the MKG (that’s me!) Bingo Parlour. It’s a vibe.

Any weekend getaways?
So I have a not-to-secret secret that I’m perhaps happiest when in Bellport, Long Island. I’ve been going out there for over a decade now. I go year-round and my kids love the green grass, the pool, the cozy fires, the holidays in Bellport. I discovered it on a whim and am so happy I did. My go-tos are Porter on the Lane and The Bellport Restaurant. If you’re looking for me, look for me there.

What was your last great vacation?
I went to Telluride last summer and, wow, it was perfection. I didn’t grow up exposed to a lot of winter sports, so those cold moments have never been my thing but I am the king of apres-aki! Being in Colorado and hiking in the mountains and meeting people and just walking on long, gorgeous days was pretty dreamy. When you go, don’t miss Van Atta speakeasy and Petite Maison.

What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I recently renovated a new apartment and was shown these bird sink handles and I fell so hard for them. My beloved Indian restaurant is called Passerine, which are songbirds. So I had to have these handles. They’re now in my powder room, and just as spectacular and special as I imagined them to be.

What store or service do you always recommend?
Sabyasachi in the West Village. It’s a wonderland. It’s something out of a fantasy novel. It’s almost not real.

Where are you donating your time or money?
Adoption is deeply personal to me as it’s how I built my family. I love to support the Adoption & Foster Family Coalition of New York, and always encourage others to do so as well.

Mornings are usually split between administrative tasks and oversight, while afternoons are dedicated to intensive R&D in the kitchen. It’s a rewarding grind as we build everything from the ground up.

What’s on the agenda for today?

Today is particularly visual — we’re doing a full photo shoot of every piece of dishware we’ve curated for the restaurant. My daily agenda involves ordering new equipment, meeting with vendors, checking on construction progress, and refining the final details of the Oyatte experience.

This weekend, I’m planning the first official staff dinner for my team. We’re heading to Moono on 32nd St. I honestly believe their food is more delicious than some of the top spots in Korea. Afterward, I’m going to Lysée with my wife for dessert. I’m keeping a close eye on their new project, Journey at Lysée, and I’m excited to see their next move.

What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?

I recently purchased Cook the Mountain by the three-star Italian chef Norbert Niederkofler. His narrative and philosophy on sustainable cooking are fascinating and have been a great source of inspiration lately.

What NYC store or service do you always recommend?

Kitchen Arts & Letters. It’s a legendary bookstore for culinary professionals. I’ve been going there since I first moved to New York about 15 years ago.

Where are you donating your time or money?

UNICEF. Living in a place like New York, it’s heartbreaking to think about children in other parts of the world who are suffering from hunger. It’s a cause I care deeply about.

It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
It’s my first week back from maternity leave, so I’m feeling especially grateful for Smalls’ four-day work week. I had one call with the board earlier today, but my schedule is otherwise clear, so I have time to clean up slides I’m presenting next week, and most importantly, get some qt in with Alma (the baby) and Joe (the baby daddy). Then, we’ll head to the city for the weekend, which we often do.

Any restaurant plans?
I have a big extended family, and we’re celebrating a cousin’s birthday this weekend with dim sum at Ocean Bay on Queens Blvd. We also have dinner booked with friends at the new Falansai in Greenpoint.

Any weekend getaways?
We’re at our place Upstate most of the time, so I have many, many recommendations in the Catskills/Hudson Valley. Close to me, for a nice night out, Chleo is my favorite restaurant: they do. not. miss. I’m also a huge fan of Ollie’s Pizza —we go at least once a week, followed by a root beer float with coffee ice cream from Cherries. A little farther out, in one direction, there’s Brushland Eating House, which I first visited in 2016 (proudly) and will always return to, and in the other, there’s Stissing House, whose vibe is undefeated.

What was your last great vacation?
I feel ridiculous saying this, but I’ve been to Palm Heights three times in the past year. The beach is stunning, the hotel is aesthetically the greatest, it’s only 70-something rooms (so it’s intimate and lovely), the food is so so good, the Garden Club is unlike any other spa I’ve been to, and their staff is incredible. I’ve never returned to a single place so many times in such short order, but it really is the freakin’ best. And every time I go I feel like it’s no one’s first time, their repeat-visit rate must be insane — for good reason. Literally we’re making an annual Palm Heights budget for this. My one tip is definitely to go off-season.

What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
How big a ticket are we talking? We got a Rivian a few months ago and it feels like a major life upgrade from our Muskmobile. If a bit smaller, these Overland sheepskins made such a cozy difference in our house through the winter. So did our Carepods in our bedroom and the nursery! One more thing: we got this Alice Waters Tuscan Grill to do some fireplace cooking.

What store or service do you always recommend?
In the city, Spencer’s Spa, 10/10. Upstate, a small store I have long loved is Maple Lawn Antiques in Stone Ridge.

Where are you donating your time?

Grandma-style

Burrow is the answer to a question you’ve likely never asked: what would happen if grandmother worked in fine dining in her youth, and now hosts home dinner parties for 30-year-old strangers well into her 80s?

The experience at the new East Williamsburg supper club is unlike any other I’ve had dining in New York City. Inside a residential home, chef Sammy Koolik is turning out ambitious food from a barebones kitchen with only four burners, not even a convection oven, nothing fancy. And he’s doing it with the warmth and generosity of a genuine balaboosta; cooking alone in the kitchen, putting a lot of love into his food.

As soon as you walk into the octogenarian-chic garden-level apartment, you’re handed a house cocktail and immersed in a room full of strangers while classic rock plays from a speaker in the corner. It’s a supper club, stripped of any pretense.

A simple egg custard course topped with royal osetra caviar was a standout, with bits of sourdough and, more surprisingly, spice. I’ve eaten my fair share of caviar but never had it combined with Sichuan peppercorns — as creative as it is delicious. The onion lasagna also blew us away. Everyone knows that the crisp edges of the lasagna are the best part, so naturally, Koolik blowtorched the rolled pasta right before serving it, ensuring we all got our crunchy fix. The final course was a baked Alaska with homemade hazelnut ice cream and feuilletine that had people literally licking their plates.

What makes Burrow special isn’t just the food. It’s the personal, intimate format without the aura of the tryhard that sometimes comes with experiences like these. No complicated menu decisions, no upsells, no check at the end (everyone has prepaid). You show up, sit down, eat, drink, talk, and go home, just like you might at any other dinner party — except also, unlike any you ever have. –Adam Fern

Three Tribeca shows closing soon, with works worth seeing before they come down.

EVE BIDDLE (above): Biddle, a co-founder of FOUND favorite Wassaic Project upstate, is a multifarious artist, but her solo exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters presents only her painstakingly handmade silkscreens on oval panels. Each one depicts the natural world (grass, flowers, water) in stark monochrome, like an overexposed negative. The singular focus of each image and their mirror-like shapes invite viewers to slow down and confront the world around them, even amongst the white-washed walls of the gallery. They’re serene, simple images, serious and undeniably beautiful. There are three monotypes, each $8500, while the editions of three are $5000.

KEN RESSEGER: Resseger’s work is intimate to say the least: each painting in this exhibition is 9 x 7 inches, including the frame. That said, the small works are expansive, holding masses of information and emotion. There are impressionistic landscapes with Gauguinesque trees as well as quieter interiors reminiscent of Degas’ subdued light-filled rooms. Roiling storms and erupting volcanoes are juxtaposed with sunsets and silent kettles in display cases. The most successful paintings are the glimpses through trees at the land below, as though the viewer was stopping along a hike for a glance at a temporary and secret vista. $6000 each.

DEBBIE KENOTE: The shaped canvases in Kenote’s solo exhibition blend texture and color into joyful abstract forms. In particular, two smaller triangular paintings hold small visible brushstrokes that vibrate with leaf-like shapes in warm tones, that radiate and vibrate at different frequencies, peacefully, as if blown in the wind. The works have a defined light source, causing undulation which, when paired with Kenote’s visible hand, prevents any flatness. The majority of the work falls outside of the budget, though the two aforementioned triangles are $4000 and $6000. –Charlie Davidson

Diner delight

On a recent drive up to Vermont, we made the short detour off the Taconic to check out Doves Diner, newly opened in the former West Taghkanic Diner space.

Co-founded by hospitality veterans Lauren Stanek and Emma Rosenbush, Doves strikes a careful balance between preservationist instincts and the reflex for a refresh. The classic interiors haven’t changed dramatically: chrome accents gleam, counter stools line the bar, and red vinyl booths remain intact. It looks exactly like a diner should. And (like any good diner) Doves is built as a place for the people, a true third space where locals, travelers, and everyone in between can gather, caffeinate, and eat well.

You can keep it simple with some toast, eggs, orange juice, and a solid cup of drip coffee. Or you can turn to the specials for something more playful, like toasted coconut-almond pancakes, or trout and eggs topped with roe. There’s also a tight bar menu if you’re in the mood for a drink — mini beers, Bloody Marys, mimosas, and a house white and red. Although the endless vinyl menu offers that classic diner illusion of anything, anytime, the more concise menu at Doves is a reflection of a kitchen focused on doing a smaller range of things really well. Still, the staples are there: French toast, tuna melt, Cobb salad.

I went classic with a strong coffee and the Doves #2, scrambled eggs, sausage, crinkle-cut fries, and buttered wheat toast with a side of jam. It was generous and reasonably priced, the kind of straightforward breakfast you expect at a diner, but executed a few notches above the norm. And of course, I ordered a pancake for the table: squidgy, with a malty sweetness, soaking up the maple syrup almost as soon as it hit the surface.

Doves honors the inclusive spirit of a classic diner while expanding what that experience can be. For locals and those who periodically make the drive up and down the Taconic, it’s a stop worth building into the routine. –Phoebe Fry

The gym and bathhouse open at 530a for the truly dedicated, but by the time I usually get there at 8a to meet my trainer, Anghie, it’s buzzing. (I try not to look at my emails during our workout!) On Tuesdays, however, she’s busy leading a three-part class for members with a guided cold plunge session, then downstairs for cardio and strength training, followed by a quick physical therapy session with massage and stretching. It’s pretty elite.

CB: It’s a very Moss Tuesday: a quick espresso, an operations walk-through, and about eight simultaneous mini-decisions that all matter. I’m in Midtown bouncing between our team workspace and the club floors, checking rooms, lighting, scent, music levels, and how the energy reads in the morning (it’s amazing how one over-bright bulb can ruin someone’s entire day).

What’s on the agenda for today?
HB: I’m excited to bring in some newness for the warmer seasons. Swimwear is on the horizon for us in terms of retail, although always in season in the Bedrock bathhouse. The shop is my next big project: we have amazing skincare and haircare brands, partners that are featured in our spa offerings (like Augustinus Bader and Oribe) as well as the Korean brand NONFICTION (which members can find in our locker rooms).

Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
HB: I have Wild Cherry at Cherry Lane Theatre in the West Village on the list. I was immediately sold on the kielbasa and kraut. And coconut cake, count me in! Also on my list are Le French Diner and Ha’s Snack Bar on the Lower East Side for the next time I have a Sunday to wander around downtown.

CB: I’ve got a new favorite on my list: Ambassador’s Clubhouse. I went to their friends-and-family preview and was genuinely blown away, beautiful room, sharp hospitality, and the kind of meal you keep thinking about the next day. I’m already going back again this weekend. Estela and JG Melon are my mainstays, especially when friends or family are visiting.

What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
CB: Medicube Age-R Booster Pro. This was a no-brainer purchase for me about two months ago. The funny part is, I finally took it out of the box this past weekend, tried it once, and now I can’t wait to make it part of my daily routine. It honestly felt like a legit at-home facial.

What NYC store or service do you always recommend?
HB: I’m totally into head spas lately! Our club is right by Koreatown, so the best options are right there for me. Lu Dream on 26th is new and my current go-to, but I want to try them all! I like doing a deep scalp cleanse with a double shampoo and rinse, followed by a deep conditioning moisturizing hair mask, back to back, to really reset my hair.

CB: Leather Spa is my go-to NYC service recommendation, especially right now, because I’m doing my post-winter reset and dropping off a stack of boots and coats for cleaning/repair. They’re elite at bringing beloved pieces back to life.

Where are you donating your time or money?
HB: I have to shout out Abandoned Angels in Queens – whenever they post about a new rescue they’re saving, I want to help. It’s where I adopted my baby cocker spaniel in 2017, and I have been a devoted follower ever since.

CB: I donate to City Harvest. They rescue food and deliver it across NYC, and the impact is immediate and measurable.
