CULTURE & LEISURE • Friday Routine
No-call day
ALYSE BORKAN • co-founder • Rocco
Neighborhood you live & work in: Williamsburg
It’s Friday afternoon. How are you rolling into the weekend?
Friday has been a no-call day for me for the past 5 years (and counting!), though if someone comes out of the woodwork to say they’ve met with me on a Friday, I do make the occasional exception… but I’m working on that!
I take Fridays slow. I recently got a juicer and have been making a beet, apple, and carrot juice with a touch of ginger. Then I write down my to-do list and get a lot of satisfaction from spending the day with a nice pen crossing off all the things I didn’t get to that week. While I’m also an advisor to consumer startup brands, I spend most of Friday just working on Rocco, my smart fridge company. Usually for me that includes getting back to creators who we’re in conversation with around making content for us, connecting with partners for our new collab colors, and prepping for upcoming launches.
Any restaurant plans?
The thought of waiting in line for a meal kind of ruins it for me, so lately I’ve been skipping the It Spots and going back to old classics: Malatesta in the West Village, Sushi Kai in the East or West Village, and Rule of Thirds in Greenpoint. Though I will say, I finally got a reservation for the Roman Feast at Roscioli (now that they reserve special slots for people with a Chase Sapphire Reserve), and I can confirm, it was as good as the location in Rome.
How about a little leisure or culture?
Othership just opened in Williamsburg, and I go so often that I actually got a… wait for it… annual membership. Ending the day toasting my body in 170º heat and jumping into an ice bath for three minutes has done wonders for my stress. My favorite part is every few minutes they throw an essential oil-infused snowball onto the stove in the sauna. The scent combinations are amazing (think: vetiver, vanilla, and cinnamon). I also love Happy Medium. I recently took a handbuilding class where we made a snack plate!
Any weekend getaways?
I recently went out east and I really love how calm it is in the off-season. I spent one day at Gurney’s where I took a stretch class, sat by the indoor pool, did a hydrotherapy circuit, and then went to lunch at the Inlet Seafood Restaurant on the water. I even spotted a bunch of whales. I went to dinner at East Hampton Grill and requested a table by their huge roaring fire. It’s a particularly cozy spot and they have the best rotisserie chicken (not counting Costco).
I’ve been dying to go to Prospect Berkshires! That’s next on my list.
What was your last great vacation?
I went to Italy in September. We started in Milan for a day, drove to Lake Garda (underrated compared to Lake Como) and then ended in the Dolomites. In Lake Garda, we stayed at Lefay which was a 15 minute drive up a mountain, but we got the very best views of the lake. They’re known for their spa facilities, so we spent lots of time in pools of different temperatures. They also had an incredible breakfast buffet with a whole room dedicated to breads and pastries. In the Dolomites, we stayed at Forestis, which I can’t recommend enough. The views really speak for themselves.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I recently got a new cabinet designed by Sarah Sherman Samuel for my dining area, and it makes me smile every time I look at it. I joke that we got a new roommate.

GETAWAYS • The Berkshires
Hotshot
The Skinny: The brick-and-mortar manifestation of Hilltown Hot Pies has been a long time coming. The phenomenon started in 2019 as a pizza pop-up in the Berkshires. In 2023, pizza-maker and proprietor Rafi Bildner bought a restaurant called John Andrews Farmhouse in Egremont, MA, and took it down to the studs. Over the last two years, he renovated, chronicling every nail and beam on Instagram as fans and locals waited for the pies to return. This fall, when Bildner finally opened the doors, the Resy pages were fully booked, the parking lot packed, and the lines out the door.
The Vibe: Casual, with booths as well as a large communal table down the middle. A new pizza oven pulls attention from almost all sides of the dining room. It’s loud inside, especially when every table’s full, but the staff is laid back, taking the time to joke with customers and give thoughtful explanations of the seasonal pizza (with roasted honeynut squash cream), despite the compounding tables of families and couples of all ages.
The Food: They describe the pizza as “Neopolian-ish” sourdough. It’s, for my money, a perfect recipe. The base is thin without being soggy, and there’s a snap in the crust. The list of pies includes some piled high with ingredients like local pork sausage, and others with housemade sauces like hot honey and giardiniera (not on the same pie). The Festa Dei Fungi is served with a generous helping of Hudson Valley mushrooms over a base of porcino cream sauce. Despite the cream, the mozz, and the grana, the chewy meatiness of mushrooms shine through.
Appetizers are as cheese-heavy as the pizzas, including housemade mozzarella sticks, thick and decadently breaded, and cheese-stuffed cabbages baked in a tomato sauce. The kale Caesar’s dressing is textbook, and it’s topped with copious amounts of grana and not-too-hard sourdough croutons, a necessity since the kale itself still had quite a crunch.
Surprisingly, there are a variety of gluten and dairy-free alternatives, a generous offer for a place where the smell of cheese and semolina wafts.
The Drink: The wine list is nearly 100% southern Italian-focused. There’s also an extensive list of Amaros and digestifs available neat or “spritz style,” as well as cocktails from a full bar.
The Verdict: Two years makes for a lot of expectations, but if you can stand the higher than average noise for a country restaurant, Hilltown Hot Pies delivers, even if the only reservation you can manage is 5p at the communal table. –Sylvie Florman

FOUND’s semi-regular roundup of what’s happening of note at nearby jetports.
JFK: Yesterday at Terminal 5, JetBlue opened the doors of BlueHouse (above), its first-ever premium lounge. The lounge is small (140 person capacity) by the standards of recent mammoth lounge rollouts, with two bars offering cocktails curated by Please Don’t Tell, a library area with books sourced from The Strand, and grab-and-go meals in collaboration with Union Square Events. Access to the lounge is tight: holders of the JetBlue Premier World Elite Mastercard and high-tier Mosaic 4 status members can enter with one guest (additional guests $39 per), while passengers booked in Mint to Europe are allowed but will pay $39 for every guest. The Points Guy reports that once the lounge has been up and running, JetBlue may look to expand it and possibly add a kitchen.
LGA/EWR: Here’s something new from Uber debuting at LGA Terminal C: kiosks, for a phone-free, app-free way to request a ride. Alrighty! Uber is also adding its shuttle service to EWR, with pickups from the West Village up to 42nd St.
ROUTING: Delta hits free wifi on 1000 planes, rest of fleet set for upgrade next year… American bringing Flagship Suites to JFK… At JFK, JetBlue ending BON (Bonaire) route, won’t bring back AMS (Amsterdam) route …American resuming UVF (Saint Lucia) service.
