GETAWAYS • Upstate
Lodge appeal
Once a movie theater, Rivertown Lodge was transformed more than a decade ago into a 27-room lodge that captures the Hudson Valley’s particular brand of rustic upstate charm and creative polish without falling into cliché. The design, by Brooklyn-based studio Workstead, balances restraint with masterful layering of texture, pattern, and color. Nothing screams for attention, but every detail rewards a second look.

It’s Friday afternoon. How are you rolling into the weekend?
In the Hamptons, when I’m not planning or producing an event, you’ll usually find me picking up flowers, either from my local shop Sag Harbor Florist, or bringing them in from the flower market in NYC. I arrange my own bouquets and fill the vases at my restaurant, styling them on a beautiful credenza that’s become such a focal point in the space, guests always stop and admire it as they walk into Elaia Estiatorio. Creating these arrangements is truly my therapy.
How about a little leisure or culture?
Out East, long walks on the beach are my favorite part of my routine. There’s nothing I love more than just soaking in the ocean and noticing how the water changes throughout the day. And of course, summer dining alfresco is just as essential. Wonderful people gathered around the table, great conversation, incredible food, and dancing — I truly live to dance!
Any weekend getaways?
A quick trip to Palm Beach or Miami, especially in the winter, is my favorite kind of reset. I always need sunshine and warm weather; nothing beats that instant boost. I love staying at Faena, The Shelborne, or the Four Seasons Surfside, with a coffee break at Soho House in Miami. And in Palm Beach, I love the White Elephant and The Breakers.
What was your last great vacation?
I traveled through Mallorca, Athens, and Naxos. In Palma, we stayed at the Nobis Hotel, shopped for beautiful ceramics at Sonmo, and drove through Deià, Valldemossa, and Sóller. Ca’s Patro March in Deià was a highlight, and one of our favorite tapas spots was El Camino in Palma.
In Greece, my favorite hotel is The Dolli in the center of Athens. I adore the design, the incredible rooftop infinity pool overlooking the Acropolis, and the fact that it’s one of the family-run Grecotel properties. We also spent time along the Athenian Riviera, where we love grabbing coffee at the Four Seasons Astir Palace and visiting some of the local designer shops.
Naxos was the perfect beachy escape and just a quick flight from Athens, we stayed along Plaka Beach. The Portara at sunset is a must-see, and of course, you must indulge in the island’s famous cheeses.
