Ice cream, 42BELOW NYC

Our partners at Hundred Stories share their favorite spots to celebrate National Ice Cream Day (07/19) in 42BELOW NYC — 42nd St. to 30th St., 5th Ave. to 8th Ave.

Grace Street Coffee & Desserts

New Yorkers spend the most in the U.S. on ice cream per year — over $45 per person, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. Though New Yorkers’ traditional favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate, you’ll find much more than that in 42BELOW NYC, the hottest emerging residential neighborhood in the city, and its latest foodie mecca.

  • Papà San (501 W 34th St), vibrant Nikkei restaurant blending Peruvian and Japanese flavors, with standout desserts including lucuma soft serve, vegan soy milk creations, and playful seasonal sweets

  • Macaron Café (488 7th Ave), charming French café serving colorful handcrafted macarons, decadent ice cream sandwiches, and classic Parisian pastries

  • Anita Gelato (108 W 33rd St), beloved for its rich, artisanal gelato, refreshing sorbets, and an extensive menu of inventive flavors made fresh daily

  • Wafels & Dinges (6th Ave & W 42nd St), the go-to spot for authentic Belgian waffles piled high with ice cream, chocolate, whipped cream, and other indulgent toppings

  • Sugar Factory (694 8th Ave), larger-than-life dessert destination famous for towering milkshakes, candy-covered treats, over-the-top sundaes, and Instagram-worthy sweets

  • The Gyro Project (505 W 37th St), Mediterranean favorite with a sweet surprise: the signature Frozen Baklava Sundae, combining flaky pastry, pistachios, honey, and creamy frozen goodness

  • Grace Street Coffee & Desserts (17 W 32nd St, above), Koreatown favorite known for its fluffy shaved ice bingsoo, silky soft serve, and beautifully crafted Asian-inspired desserts

  • Tous Les Jours (31 W 32nd St), popular Korean bakery serves seasonal bingsoo, refreshing cold desserts, delicate cakes, and freshly baked pastries throughout the year

GETAWAYS • Maine

Summer fling

For those shortly heading north to Maine for camp pickups or a week The Way Life Should Be, a meal or two in Portland — a restaurant city that continues to punch above its weight — is de rigeur. There are several ways to play it, from queuing at 430p for walk-in seating at the OG Portland fine-dining restaurant Fore Street, returning to Portland’s top new guard oyster bar Eventide, or hopping on a boat into Casco Bay for a meal at peacock island paradise Crown Jewel. (The Peaks Island pizzeria Il Leone, touted in this space last summer, now regrettably only can be found in Park Slope.)

This year, I’ve got a new (also fleeting) Portland restaurant to put on your radar.
