Neighborhood you work & live in: Fort Greene
It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
Friday afternoon walks help me draw the line between work and life. I like to grab a matcha, call a friend, or even pick one up to walk with me. So much of writing is staring at a computer screen, so I use this time to read or journal in the park if the weather’s nice.
Where are you drinking or dining this weekend?
A Sunday night dinner at Margot in my neighborhood is a favorite of mine. I love a late afternoon coffee from Bittersweet and breakfast from Peckish. Sometimes I’ll lace up my sneakers and head to Court Street Grocers for a sandwich and a walk. I love Casamara Club and stock my fridge for the weekend.
How about a little leisure or culture?
Most weekends, I pop into Greenlight for a new book. Seeing a movie at BAM or Cobble Hill Cinema is also a real standby. My husband and I like to make a day out of a trip to a museum — so Noguchi and dinner in Greenpoint, something like that. I try to stay off my phone as much as possible, and hosting people for dinner makes that easy. Grilling is great, but my dinner party duties usually revolve around the seating arrangement and candle lighting.
Any weekend getaways?
We’ve been spending lots of time in Connecticut and Upstate. A quick train ride to Rhinebeck feels like a total reset. We’re in Long Beach a lot, which I adore for its total lack of charm. My husband surfs. I read in the backyard and stock up on biscuits at the Irish Tea Shop. It’s a simple life, even if it’s just for the weekend.
What was your last great vacation?
I visited Big Sur for the first time this summer and can’t believe it’s taken me almost thirty years to fall in love with it like everyone else. Deetjens, obviously. Pfeiffer Beach and a picnic. Stopping in Carmel-by-the-Sea for groceries from the farmers market before getting to Big Sur was kind of the best part. I still dream of that produce.
What store or service do you always recommend?
When people want a luxurious facial rec, there’s only one person — Elizabeth Hand at ställe studios in Soho. She’s incredible at her job and you’ll leave reborn.
