It’s Tuesday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I usually work from home on Tuesdays. Una is open Thursday through Saturday, and we’re full-on all day and night on those days. Monday through Wednesday are my catch-up days to handle a lot of administrative work, have meetings, and make progress on bigger projects. I try to sleep in until around 8a if my dog Clams Casino will let me. My husband Anthony is already long gone on a bike ride — he’s the early bird in the family. I try to start the day with some stretching or yoga (I have a few Yoga with Adriene go-tos) and will usually have fruit and yogurt for breakfast.
What’s on the agenda for today?
I’m planning for Una’s 30th anniversary next year. It’s such a huge milestone, and we want to celebrate throughout the year with pop-ups and other ways to highlight Anthony’s incredible career so far. We’re lucky to have guests who have visited Una for decades, so we want to collect stories and photos of memorable Una experiences and do something thoughtful with them. (If anyone would like to share one, they can do so here.)
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
I’m pregnant and have been craving meat, so one go-to is lunch at Hearth, where I love the Variety Burger with a side of potatoes fried in beef tallow. Anthony surprised me the other week for my birthday with dinner at Rao’s, which had been at the top of my bucket list.
Some other favorites recently are the kitchari and saffron golden milk at abcV for breakfast, the rajas tamales from Yolanda’s Tamales in Harlem, the scone with butter and jam from Mary O’s Irish Soda Bread Shop, momos at Lhasa, and the breakfast burritos at Los Tacos No. 1. I’ve been dying to try the masa pancakes at Hellbender (and everything else on the menu), so I’ll be getting there soon, too.
How about a little leisure or culture?
I recently visited my friend Melanie Dunea’s exhibit for her new book, Amuse-Bouche, which is gorgeous and creative and fun.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
Though I didn’t make the purchase, Anthony gifted me a beautiful gold necklace as a birthday and early baby present that he worked on with the amazing NY-based jewelry specialist Mirta de Gisbert. I’m obsessed with it.
What NYC store or service do you love to recommend?
I love finding spots that make you feel transported to another time or place and pull you out of your routines and haste even just for a few minutes.
I recently stopped into Nickey Kehoe on 10th St. It’s a beautifully restored and designed row house that used to be Jackson Pollock’s home. Make sure to go upstairs — it’s quite dramatic.
A visit to John Derian scratches my childhood crafting and decoupage itch. I can find an unexpected and unique gift or card there, and I always leave feeling a little more levity and connection to my inner child.
I’m always coming up with ideas for stamps to have made at Casey Rubber Stamps on E. 11th.
I find the cutest Japanese notepads and tiny envelopes for little notes that I don’t need but always want at nico neco zakkaya on E. 9th.
